Background Information

Caha Pech is a fifteen-minute walk from San Ignacio Town situated on the top of a hill in a serene jungle. This 22.39 acres of interesting archeological site when translated in Maya Yucatecan Language means “Place of Ticks” and was coined in the 1950’s when the area around the site was used as a pasture.

On this tour we will observe early cultural remains, circular platforms that were used for ceremonial purposes, carved symbols on pottery and decorative beads made from conch shells.  We will also learn about the history of this densely populated Maya site, which existed from the Middle Pre classic to the late Classic Period and gain a better understanding of how the residents of Cahal Pech traded and communicated with neighbours at the nearby cities of Xunantunich, Baking Pot, El Pilar and Buena Vista.

The site is also a perfect spot for morning birding watching, its flora and fauna attract many species of birds which can be seen during the tour.
